Size Guide for Hanging Japanese Folding Screens

STANDARD: 3/4 inch deep x 2.5 inches wide
The channel depth is 3/4", suiting most traditional Japanese screens with lacquer edging.

WIDE: 3/4 inch deep x 5 inches wide
Wide clips are great for extra support of tall (over 45") or oversized panels. They also provide more coverage of hinge-points for torn, damaged, or broken hinges.

LARGE: 1 inch deep x 5 inches wide
Large screen clips are specially made for thicker screens or for those that are damaged, warped, or uneven.

The large clip channel depth is 1 inch. The 5-inch width allows for greater support by distributing the weight across a larger area and allowing more forgiveness during installation.

Weight Guide and Recommendations

These screen clips support traditional Japanese screens up to 6ft tall and 12ft wide.

For delicate or damaged screens requiring additional support, we suggest using the WIDE clips. They offer greater stability and help prevent further damage to loose or ripped hinges. The wider design also simplifies the installation process by providing more flexibility in measurements.

Is your screen over 35 pounds or not a Japanese screen? We recommend using our heavy-duty steel brackets, which are excellent for heavier pieces like Chinese or Korean screens, wood carvings, and heavy paintings.

Color Options to Match Your Screen

For a standard screen with a black lacquer edge, we recommend using black clips. If your lacquer edging is natural wood, orange, red, or other colors, we recommend the clear clips.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Hang a Japanese Folding Screen

Installing Your 4-Panel Japanese Screen (Byobu) with Our Mounting Kit:

  1. Position the Bottom Clips:
Place the bottom row of screen clips at the center of each fold. Use the double-sided positioning tape on the back for initial placement. Once they are level and straight, nail them into place. Set your screen into the channels created by the bottom clips.
  2. Secure the Top Clips:
Have someone assist by holding the screen in place (apply pressure along the folds where there are wooden supports beneath the paper/silk). Use a tissue or soft cloth to protect the surface from oils on your hands. Slide the top clips over the top edge at each fold and nail into place.
  3. Attach the Side Clips:
Position one side clip at each end, centered along the screen's height, and nail it in place. The installation is complete!
