Hanging a Japanese folding screen above a mantel can be challenging when space is tight, but the result can be striking. Jessica’s serene living room is proof—her screen fits perfectly above the mantel and completely transforms the space.
Why This Design Works
The gorgeous light in this room paired with the traditional Chinese landscape folding screen creates a fresh Chinoiserie-inspired focal point. The display balances Western architectural elements with Asian artwork beautifully.
Although her shelves are not minimalist, their monochromatic color palette lets the screen shine. By keeping accessories light and tonal, the entire wall feels cohesive and calm instead of cluttered.
How to Mount a Folding Screen in Tight Spaces
1 — Measure Your Space
Measure the width of your screen panels and the available wall space above the mantel. This ensures your screen fits neatly without crowding the ceiling or trim.
2 — Use Low-Profile Clear Brackets
Jessica used our Clear Lucite 4-Panel Japanese Folding Screen Mounting Kit. The slim brackets require only about 1" of top clearance, making them perfect for narrow spaces above mantels or between shelves.

3 — Secure and Center the Screen
Install the bottom brackets, position the screen into place, and secure the top brackets for a secure hold. The clear mounts are nearly invisible, allowing the artwork to float on the wall.
4 — Style the Surroundings
Jessica styled her shelving with a restrained monochrome palette—silver, white, and blue ceramics—which quietly frame the screen without competing for attention. The effect is cohesive, elegant, and calm.
